October 5th, 2009    Take One

Today was our first day on the set of 2012 Devolution. After day one, we've decided that being in a movie is both painful and fun. Painful because Rebecca had to lie in the same position for much of the day, and fun because we're surrounded by great people and it's amazing to be co-creating something this big with such a large team of people.

The story revolves around what might happen in 2012,
when the Mayan calendar ends (or begins again . . .)
We got there early in the morning to help with some setting up, and ended filming at 8 in the evening or so. Then Rebecca and I came home and went right out the door for a long night run, up through a cemetery and along darkened roads. Since we've been reading Born To Run and flirting with the idea of doing some ultra-distance running (barefoot of course, although Rebecca might try to get her hands . . . um, feet, rather, on some Vibram Five-Fingers, a sort of glove for your feet), we've been having this urge to take a whole day and head off for a run in the morning, not coming back until it's dark. Indeed, tonight as we ran over the hills, we could feel a curious settled feeling as if we could just run on and on forever.

Tomorrow we're up early again, and much of this month will be taken with filming, so we should have some good movie-making stories to tell.

On a nature note, we came across this wonderful plant with fake-looking berries outside the house where we were shooting today. Oddly, although neither of us knew what it was, we guessed 'Pokeberry'. I suppose when you've pored over enough books on biology and plants and nature, some things just get buried in one's brain. Pokeweed it is.

These cartoon-like Pokeweed berries aren't quite ripe yet.
They sure look delightful, though!

The berries are toxic, which of course makes me want to taste them, just to see what they're like.  Must . . . resist . . . shiny berries . . .
