May 4th, 2009    Wild Abundance

Yesterday was one of the most wildlife-abundant days we've ever experienced.  Oddly, many of our encounters were in town, where the density of wild things seems to be greater than out here in the country.  Wilderness truly is everywhere.

Our adventures began with turtles -- this soft-shelled was about 20 inches in diameter!

Soft-shells and snappers are easily distinguished by the shapes
of their heads in the water (soft-shelled on right).

This mud-coated turtle was difficult to identify.

More hiking along the banks of Lake Menomin and we made a discovery -- a muskrat den.

Observing a local resident.

Then came a stunning sighting.  Down to the water's edge, secretive and silent, padded a grey fox.

A grey ghost.

It wasn't only animals that caught our eyes . . .

But our wildlife adventures were just beginning.  Our friend Jen led us to a discovery she had made -- a very magical discovery . . .

Fox kits!

For a long while, until the sun began to fade, we sat near the den and watched the kits romp about.  Their rough-house play brought plenty of laughter, and you could see adult-fox skills emerging as they pounced, balanced across logs, stalked one other, and bit each other's tails, executing the famous 'dog head shake'.  We felt so lucky to be in the presence of these creatures.  What a joy!
