December 21st, 2009    Land of the Wolves

Last year we learned that a pack of wolves lives very near our home at Sweetwater. We confirmed it with the DNR, and were ready to mount expeditions when Rebecca was injured falling off her horse. Since then, we’ve been waiting anxiously for the snow to come so that we could venture to the Land of the Wolves and search for tracks. This past weekend we ventured out on our first expedition!

We plowed our way through the snow for a couple of hours, weaving our way from one natural wonder to the next. This particular forest doesn’t see a lot of human traffic, so you feel like you can get pleasantly lost, especially with a heavy snowfall. We had many adventures as we searched for signs of the wolves . . .

A squirrel's eye view of  one of the old pines that are found in the wolf-woods.

Plenty of places to hide and crawl about.

When trees fall out here, the DNR must take some for wood. This tree saw a lot of years . . .

Rebecca in front of a cliff? Nope. This is the root-base of a tree that fell over.

We spied an unusual number of faerie-dens.

Great forces at work.

It was a long trek. Rebecca sums up the feeling as we finally near our car.

Though we spent a long time in the woods and carefully searched the trails that all the woodland animals had left, we found no sign of the wolves. This time, they eluded us. But we’ll be back to seek them out again.
